Josh Groban at Bridgewater Hall - Review

Josh Groban @ Bridgewater Hall
Manchester Daily News
Helen Tither
28/5/2007

WITH his bouncing brown ringlets, clean-shaven good looks, and charming smile, Josh Groban is the kind of young man your mum would love you to meet.

He's nice. Too nice, in fact, for his own good. Which is how he comes to be wearing a not-too-attractive England football shirt emblazoned with 'Groban 1' for half of his show - a present from a fan who tells him to put it on.

He's just too polite to take it off, poor lamb. Plus, he says removing it would mean we might see him naked. Which only serves to excite the fluorescent wristband-waving women in the audience even more.

A crossover pop/opera artist in the Russell Watson mould (only, I would argue, lacking the vocal power of Salford's own superstar), Groban has built up a band of female followers, known as 'Grobanites', back in the US.

Judging by his reception at the Bridgewater, as he walks around singing and hugging the audience, such adoration is catching this side of the pond too. . . . more...

Josh Groban on Paul Simon’s Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes & More..

Going for a song
Josh Groban on Paul Simon’s Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes
The Sunday Times, May 20, 2007

I remember becoming interested at a young age in sounds and styles of music that were pretty left of centre from what was normally heard on the radio and television. Los Angeles, where I grew up, was a great melting pot for cultural activity, and I was lucky enough to have cool parents who, without being pushy, made sure that my brother and I were exposed to as many performances and albums as possible. Every now and again, though, an album or a song comes into your life that doesn’t just entertain you, it totally changes the way you think about music and the possibilities it holds as a universal language. For me, the album was Paul Simon’s Graceland, the song was Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes, and I was eight years old. ...read more here...

Josh Groban, A Songbird Without A Pigeonhole

Songbird without a pigeonhole
The Australian News
Iain Shedden
May 18, 2007
He has sold more than 20 million albums. Maybe Josh Groban doesn't need a genre:

LOG on to Josh Groban's website and you can get yourself a nice set of JG pyjamas, presumably so you can make yourself cosy while listening to his latest CD, Awake. You can buy the album too, of course, along with the other two the 26-year-old Californian singer has made since his breakthrough six years ago. If you already have the jammies and the albums, chances are you're a Grobanite, the name created to describe his more hardcore fans. To date Groban has sold 20 million albums, has sung with Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion and Elton John, and landed a starring role on the television show Ally McBeal when its co-star Robert Downey Jr was fired.

A classically trained vocalist who aspired to a Broadway career, the eloquent and handsome Groban now finds himself a pop star, albeit one who doesn't fit the mould of disposable Idol candidates.

"It doesn't fit in any particular box," he says of his music, "so the fact that it has done so well is a blessing."

Some critics have tried to place Groban in the pseudo-classical or mock-opera basket, but he doesn't subscribe to either description.

"You get those," he says. "It's very simple how I react to it. Opera is not where my CD has ever been placed in the store. This is pop music. I would much rather widen the walls of an increasingly narrow genre such as pop than say this is pseudo-classical or a twist on opera. But I'm not going to make apologies for my voice. It is what it is when I wake up in the morning. It's important for me to stay true to that voice and to the classical training that I've had."

Groban has yet to become a household name in Australia, but that may change after he makes his concert debut in September. Certainly the small gathering of music industry and media types who gathered for a one-off, intimate performance at Sydney Opera House's Utzon Room two weeks ago were impressed by the purity and passion of his delivery.

It's true that terms such as opera, classical, pop and the dreaded easy listening are often employed in an effort to describe the sweeping melodrama and pitch-perfect enunciation of his material.

"I've always fallen between a pop and classical sound," he says over lunch at his Sydney hotel. "I think that's why I want to do theatre one day, because that's kind of where my voice fits in." ...read more here...

Josh Groban "Mix of Voices"

Mix of voices
Catriona Mathewson
Couriermall
May 17, 2007 12:00am

SOME people have it tough, don't they? Poor old Josh Groban is torn between the voice he has and the voice he, at times, would like to have.

Not that there's anything wrong with his voice, he hastens to add. It's just that it dictates, or limits, the style of music he feels he can perform.

Falling halfway between pop and opera – "popera", if you like – Groban's mellow voice has helped him sell more than 15 million albums, earned him audiences with Nelson Mandela, The Pope and Oprah Winfrey, and won him a legion of fans who call themselves the Grobanites.

So he's certainly not ungrateful. "I wouldn't exchange it for any voice in the world," he says, "but there are voices in my head and my heart too that want to come out sometimes."

And those voices are a little more experimental than his back catalogue of staid tenor ballads would suggest.

This inner battle is perhaps best illustrated by a glance at the US singer's iPod.

It holds such an unexpectedly random collection you'd think someone's technophobic grandad had accidentally downloaded it.

"There's some Massive Attack, a Vietnamese jazz called Nguyen Le, Postal Service, Phil Collins," Groban begins, scrolling through his playlist, "the Orlando Pops Orchestra playing Phantom of the Opera, Rufus Wainwright, System of a Down, Thom Yorke's solo album, an episode of South Park, Annie Lennox and some tenor stuff."

They're some varied influences, but ones Groban is trying to incorporate into his music as he edges further away from the classical and more towards the pop side of the game.

"I love what I do, but at the same time, as I feel more confident about going into other areas," Groban says. "There are different styles I would like to tap into just because I feel that's a huge part of who I am even if people have a certain idea of me."

His most recent album featured collaborations with Ladysmith Black Mambazo (acknowledging a deep love of African music which dates back to childhood), Dave Matthews and the legendary Herbie Hancock.

But Groban is conscious of not dramatically altering his style. "I want to always make music my fans want to listen to. It's about taking their hand and guiding them slowly. It's about pleasant surprises not shocking." . . .more...

Josh Groban Reaches Young And Old With Romance

Josh Groban Reaches Young And Old With Romance
(CBS News)

NEW YORK Josh Groban has been called "the boy wonder of the voice," with a classic sound and a repertoire that defies categorization, even in a record store.

"When I go into music stores, I find it, you know, all over the place," he told Sunday Morning correspondent Sandra Hughes. "I like to think of what I do as pop music. I think of my voice as a pop voice. But it's not without its classical training and classical influences and world music influences and that kind of thing."

He's not a big fan of the catchy term some people have given to his style of music: "Popera."
"I've never been fond of those kind of gimmicky kind of words for things" he said. "I really hope people listen to me and say, 'Oh, that's just Josh.'" ...more...
