Josh Groban "Noel" Editorial Reviews

Josh Groban "Noel" Editorial Reviews

If you are one of those folks keeping track of Josh's charts and reviews, it is pretty amazing to watch this wonderful new album burn up the charts this early in the season but, as with all wonderful music, it is showing beautifully in numbers and reviews. Have a peek at some of the editorial reviews and if you are not convinced after hearing this album and reading the reviews that this will be the classic Christmas album of all time, we would suggest getting a really fast appointment with your eye and ear doctors! Read on....

"The Grammy-nominated, twenty-something, pop-classical phenomenon's fourth studio album is an expertly accomplished entry to the holiday marketplace. Noël tackles the familiar sounds of holiday music with a charmingly eclectic array of guest vocalists and a wide range of material. The songs range from the sacred to the secular, while Groban--buoyed in spots by none other than the London Symphony Orchestra--soars in his duets with Brian McKnight, Faith Hill, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. There's even a song with a gospel choir directed by Kirk Franklin. Produced yet again by crossover maestro David Foster, the arrangements never overwhelm the songs. Groban's smooth and supple vocals can be hard to categorize--seeing how his range is somewhere in-between a high baritone and a low tenor--but he always finds and emphasizes the emotional core of these songs. And whether they have origins in pop or classical music seems not to matter. The addition of messages from troops stationed in Iraq on top of "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is undeniably heart-wrenching, while the album's highlight is its most spare song, "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," which finds Groban alone at his piano, sounding very much like some kind of angel." Mike McGonigal, Amazon & Target

"Pop-classical sensation Josh Groban gets the Christmas spirit on his fourth studio album, Noel, a superbly produced, holiday-themed showcase for the 26-year-old's smooth singing. Veering between pop-oriented and lush classical arrangements, the album delivers a delightful variety of approaches to Yultetide favorites. "Silent Night" kicks off the set in classic style, assisted by the boys' choir of Magdalen College, Oxford, with majestic accompaniment from the London Symphony Orchestra. Next up, "Little Drummer Boy" gets a contrasting rhythm-driven treatment, with guitarist Andy McKee supporting Groban's rich vocals. Further pop-styled tracks feature duets with Brian McKnight ("Angels We Have Heard on High") and Faith Hill ("The First Noel," with the added boost of a gospel choir), while "I'll Be Home for Christmas" mixes in touching messages home from soldiers serving overseas -- a device that risks sounding maudlin but instead tugs genuinely on the heart strings. Wrapping things up in a neat bow, Groban channels his inner Andrea Bocelli on "Panis Angelicus" -- perhaps his most operatic-sounding track ever -- and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir helps to send it thrillingly over the top on the album closer "O Come All Ye Faithful." Produced by hitmaker David Foster, with expert arrangements from Bill Ross and others, Groban's first collection of seasonal songs is sure to be a Yuletide smash." EJ Johnson, Barnes & Noble

"The holiday season brings the inevitable onslaught of new Christmas albums, with many of them so similar that they merely blur together before slipping out of sight completely. Drawing from a semi-limited selection of music, the challenge is to create something that both captures the tradition of the holiday and also sounds fresh and new. It should come as no surprise that Josh Groban manages to do both with ease. On Noel, his first holiday album, Groban brings his beautiful, inimitable pop-opera vocals to 13 holiday songs. From the moment he opens the disc with "Silent Night" until he wraps it nearly an hour later, Groban wraps his vocals around the songs for consistently delightful results. He delivers a range of songs that include both secular and sacred favorites, and he also shows his classical training with songs like "Ave Maria," "Petit Papa Noel" and "Panis Angelicus." Never predictable, Groban moves easily from traditional music to more contemporary flavored offerings without missing a beat. Covering some of the staples such as "The Christmas Song," "What Child is This?" and "Little Drummer Boy," Groban infuses them with his signature warmth and grace. But it's his rendition of the classic "I'll Be Home For Christmas" that stands out as the disc's most touching track. The song, which first became a hit for Bing Crosby in 1943 as troops fought for their country in World War II, feels as relevant today as it was then. And Groban's addition of personal holiday messages from soldiers fighting in Iraq makes it a sobering and sentimental reminder of what many families are facing this holiday season. Although Groban doesn't need any help to send out his holiday greetings, he has an all-star list of guests joining him on this album. The great David Foster accompanies him on piano on several of the tracks, and he's also given accompaniment by guitarist Andy McKee and from the London Symphony Orchestra. It makes for an incredible variety of music that feels truly inspired. On the glorious "Angels We Have Heard on High," R&B star Brian McKnight shows up to lend his vocal power to Groban's already mighty pipes. The results are truly majestic, and the sound of the two men harmonizing together provides one of the disc's numerous highlights. Faith Hill also drops by to chime in, and her contributions to "The First Noel" are as goosebump-inducing as one would expect. Joined by a gospel choir -- directed by none other than gospel star Kirk Franklin -- the duo takes this familiar favorite and turns it into a exuberant vocal celebration. You'll never hear the song the same way again. As a truly grand finale, Groban delivers "O Come All Ye Faithful" with some help from the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. In such capable hands, the song feels both reverent and powerful, and it celebrates the season in a way that leaves no question as to what the season is all about. The beauty of Christmas music is generally not in discovering new songs, but in unwrapping new and exciting ways to convey traditional holiday standards. Josh Groban has given his fans a true gift this season, and Noel is bound to become a favorite for years to come." Paula Felps, Wal-Mart

Sharing Josh Groban's Noel with Troops, Hospitals, Nursing Homes

Friends, we at JG and JPN are purchasing Josh's "Noel" to share not only with friends and family and give as Christmas gifts but also to share with the troops, hospitals and nursing homes. There are many folks that will not be with loved ones this Christmas whether in far-away places or incapacitated in some way. Many have family in hospital or nursing homes. What a wonderful way to share the love of Josh with the Christmas spirit by giving this gift to others. It is all about giving and loving one another. Let it be that Josh and others are blessed by sharing this upcoming holiday season.

I have created a beautiful one-of-the-kind life-like handmade porcelain bisque doll of "Noel Joshua" through my JoyPals Design Studio which I am donating for Christmas. This is another way to help raise awareness and contribute. If you have not seen my work, here is one of my current creations:

We will reveal the surprise "Noel Joshua" doll as we get closer to the holidays.

Josh Groban Reviews: Manila, Philippines; Noel No 1, Canadian Charts

Cory, Imelda catch Groban concert
Philippine Star - Manila,Philippines
By Joanne Rae Ramirez
Friday, October 19, 2007
Music unites people and melts differences, even for just two hours.

It took world-renowned singer Josh Groban to make former President Corazon Aquino attend a concert – her first. It brought her under the same roof as avid concert-goer former First Lady Imelda Marcos, whose husband Ferdinand’s regime was toppled by a bloodless revolution led by Mrs. Aquino 21 years ago.

“For a first timer like me, I was very impressed. I really had such a nice time,” said Mrs. Aquino when approached by The STAR after the concert at the Philippine International Convention Center, which had the well-heeled audience swaying, swinging and swooning.

The concert also drew raves from Mrs. Marcos, an aspiring singer before she became a political wife. She told The STAR she found Groban’s concert “fantastic,” adding she found the 26-year-old former California choirboy to be “all-around, even if he is so young.” She was seen merrily twirling the blue light stick distributed by Smart Infinity, the show’s major sponsor, during the concert.

Mrs. Aquino and Mrs. Marcos were seated on different levels of the PICC Plenary Hall.

Groban, whose rich baritone has been described by audiences worldwide as “deliciously flawless,” was in Manila for his first and only Asian concert. Moved by the response of the light stick-waving crowd that erupted in applause with his every hit, Groban announced in mid-concert: “I’m coming back to Manila!”

His manager, Brian Avnet, told Francis Lumen, who was responsible for bringing Groban to Manila, “Josh was so moved!” ...more...

Josh Groban Review: "Heavenly Notes from a Heavenly Voice"

"Heavenly Notes from a Heavenly Voice"
"Heavenly Notes"

Noel Review
"JACY"

"Josh Groban has shown himself to be the vocalist par excellance and "Noel" will be, without a doubt, the best Christmas album ever produced. Josh is in a class by himself with powerful vocals, depth of soul and expression in the lyrical way in which he sings. A voice for the ages and he has only begun. We are in for a wonderful journey in music with him. "Panis Angelicus," "Ave Maria," "Silent Night" and "O Come All Ye Faithful" are magnificent! "I'll be Home for Christmas" (2006 enhanced version with messages from the troops) is so special it makes the heart cry; "Little Drummer Boy," terrific and a sure "new" classic; all of them are special and a must-listen, must-have, must buy gift for your friends and loved ones. You cannot really name a favorite from this CD as they are all 5 stars and favorites!

We are sure this will not only be the best classic Christmas album but Josh's honoring the original versions, his faithfulness to the lyric and intent of these treasures will reap, we are sure, multitudes of blessings upon him not only from his fans, the public and the music world, but also from the God who has gifted him with the voice to sing these wonderful songs. Thank you Josh for your faithfulness! We are blessed indeed and will have, a very Merry Christmas! "

Josh Groban Australia Awake Tour Review: Fans Left Entranced by a Magical Voice

Josh Groban fans left entranced by a magical voice

CAROLINE McILWAINE
Adelaide Now
October 15, 2007 05:30pm
IF you were anywhere other than the Entertainment Centre on Friday night, you missed arguably the music experience of the year - Josh Groban in concert.

Just speak to the legion of fans of the U.S. singing sensation with the rich baritone voice who worked his magic on the adoring audience from the moment the stage sheet-curtain dropped from the rafters to reveal Groban belting out You Are Loved, the signature tune of his current Australian tour.

Following four sold-out performances at the Sydney Opera House, Groban delivered two hours of music with his uniquely charismatic, powerful and interactive style of stagemanship, which allowed fans to appreciate both his towering vocal talent and the growing feeling that each member of the audience was important to him.

The evocative rendition of songs such as Un Dia Llegara was followed by cheerful banter with concert-goers, many of whom tossed restraint aside to shriek with delight at the 26-year-old, dark-eyed, dark-haired singer-songwriter who enjoys huge fame in the U.S. and growing renown in Australia, Britain and elsewhere.

Backed as always by the tremendously-talented violinist Lucia Micarelli and his six-piece pop-rock band, Groban also was joined on stage by a string and brass component of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, which delivered beautifully on the night. The overall sound was pitch-perfect, energising and uplifting – nothing jarred or grated.

While the light show and backdrop graphics enhanced the event, all eyes were on Groban himself, who made each and every song a soulful experience.

For many, the highlight was the star’s foray into the audience which was no cursory venture but a 10-minute roam throughout the auditorium, up and down stairs, giving and receiving high-fives, dodging hugs and embraces while - incredibly – singing flawlessly.

For some fans, who have followed Josh Groban since even before the launch of his first self-titled album more than six years ago, the classical numbers are the real deal. If they lament his delving into all kinds of genres – including pop – they can take heart from the knowledge that the classical influence permeates everything.

His is quite simply a sublime voice.

Flirting with boy-like charm with the females of the audience, Groban, sitting at his piano, spoke about the impact of romantic ballads and wryly acknowledged that some “significant others” might have been dragged along to his concert - to which he quipped “Good on you for that, and we all hope you enjoy the night anyway”.

His great regard for the audience – some of whom left their seats to stand at the stage edge - was no more evident than at the close of the evening when he responded to two rousing standing ovations with three encores - which included the moving You Raise Me Up (for which Groban was joined by members of a terrific local choir).

With promises of a return to Adelaide in the future, Groban exited to the thunderous applause of a sated audience, many of whom will no doubt be first in line for his soon-to-be-available Christmas CD, Noel.

New Josh Groban Christmas CD 'NOEL' to Be Released for Holidays

BURBANK, CA--(Marketwire - October 2, 2007) - Christmas joy arrives early this year for millions of Josh Groban fans as 143/Warner/Reprise Records announces the release of 'NOEL,' the artist's long-anticipated classic recording of holiday songs. Scheduled to arrive in stores on October 9th, Groban is joined on 'Noel' by the London Symphony Orchestra and several guest artists and has once again collaborated with Grammy-winning producer David Foster.

Recorded in LA and the famed Abbey Road Studio in London in between performances of the 26-year-old Groban's "Awake" Tour, the collection of holiday songs on 'Noel' includes such classics as "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear" with Josh on acoustic piano, "Silent Night," "Little Drummer Boy," "The Christmas Song," "O Come All Ye Faithful" with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and "Ava Maria." Groban duets with Faith Hill on "The First Noel," with a choir under the direction of gospel legend Kirk Franklin. In addition, singer Brian McKnight adds his vocals on "Angels We Have Heard On High" and the haunting version of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" features messages from troops stationed overseas.

"I was inspired by all the Christmases I've been fortunate enough to celebrate with my family over the last 26 years," commented Groban. "I was committed to making a classic Christmas album yet one that sounded different than anything that's been heard on a holiday record. David Foster and I were passionate about creating the perfect collection of songs."

Groban, whose collective international CD sales have topped 17 million copies, is currently on the road in Australia where he is continuing his sold out "Awake" concert tour which has been seen by over 800,000 people. He is expected to make promotional TV appearances in November on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," NBC's "Christmas Tree Lighting at Rockefeller Center" November 28th and "Good Morning America" November 30th.
