Josh Groban's 'Noel' Stands To Mary J. Blige's Bow

Josh Groban's 'Noel' Stands To Mary J. Blige's Bow
Classical vies with soul for pop supremacy!
Written by CAROLYN RICHARDSON

MARY J. BLIGE's first week of release could not topple JOSH GROBAN's record-breaking feat at #1 with his Christmas album entitled Noel.

Released in 1957, ELVIS's Christmas Album stood at #1 for four non-consecutive weeks prior to Josh's accomplishment of five consecutive weeks, according to Billboard Magazine. Groban covers all of the notable Christmas songs on his set, including "O Come All Ye Faithful," "Silent Night," "Ave Maria," and "The First Noel." His rendition of "Ave Maria" will draw comparisons to the great opera tenors, BOCELLI and the late PAVAROTTI.

The classical singer no doubt is still rising, and this disc's success will expose his voice to a wider audience, as the standards he covers can easily become standard recordings to spread holiday cheer. Like BING CROSBY's "White Christmas" and NAT KING COLE's "The Christmas Song," Groban's arrangements are familiar and true to the originals. Groban's feat also pushes Noel to the best-selling album of 2007 with over 2.8 millions albums sold. ..more...

Josh Groban's "Noel" (143/Reprise) this week becomes the first Christmas album to top The Billboard 200 for five straight weeks, after moving 757,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Groban's total, which was up 13% from last week, helped hold off hefty competition from Mary J. Blige's "Growing Pains" (Geffen), the only debut to crack the top 10 this week. The R&B star's ninth album landed at No. 2 and shifted 629,000 copies.

The Grammy-Nominated Singer and Songwriter Shares His Favorite Songs

Daytime talk show queen Oprah Winfrey is not only giving her blessing to Barack Obama, she's also giving support to singer Josh Groban.

In her recent "Favorite Things" show Winfrey named Groban's Christmas album, "Noel" as one of her favorite things of 2007. But besides being on Winfrey's list, "Noel" is making news of it's own: it is now the biggest selling CD of 2007. It has surpassed "High School Musical" and beaten Elvis Presley's long-standing record for having the longest-running Christmas CD at number one.

One of Groban's most famous songs is his cover of Brian Kennedy's "Raise Me Up."

"Raise me up has been a big hit for me, that's one that I don't think I'll ever be able to go on stage without singing in America at least," Groban said. "I think it's one of those songs that has a lyric that is so meaningful yet so open to interpretation." ...more...

"Noel" Is the Biggest Selling CD of 2007; "Noel" Becomes the Longest Running Christmas Album at Number One in Billboard 51 Year Chart History With a Four Week Run (and Counting); "Noel" Breaks the Previous Record Held by Elvis Presley; Groban's Catalogue Sales up by 50%

BURBANK, CA--(Marketwire - December 19, 2007) - Singer Josh Groban is giving big thanks to Santa this holiday season as his album "Noel" maintains the Number One slot for an astounding 4th week in a row, surpassing Elvis Presley's record for most weeks at Number One for a Christmas album in Billboard Magazine's 51 year chart history. The King's "Elvis' Christmas" had previously held the Number One slot in 1957 for a total of three weeks.

Groban's "Noel" has sold 669,661 albums this past week for total US sales of 2.8 million copies, passing the blockbuster "High School Musical" (2.7 million) and "Daughtry" (2.3 million), and shows no signs of slowing down. In addition, Groban's previous multi-platinum albums have had huge sales jumps. "Awake," "Closer" and his self-titled debut have all had jumps of between 45 and 50 percent this past week.

The 26-year-old Los Angeles native is currently in Europe promoting his CD, which has been certified-gold in France, four times platinum in Canada and Number One in South Africa. On the radio, "Noel" has been in the Number One slot on the BDS (Billboard) Main Stream Adult Contemporary Chart for four weeks, and remains the number one selling album on Amazon and all digital sales charts.

Groban, who has upcoming appearances on "Good Morning America" on December 22nd and 24th, "Larry King Live" on December 24th and the "ABC Disney Special" on the morning of December 25th, has been declared one of "Oprah's Favorite Things" on a recent "The Oprah Winfrey Show." The artist also opened the NBC Christmas Tree Lighting Show singing "O Come All Ye Faithful" and performed "I'll Be Home For Christmas" on "Good Morning America" for several returning soldiers and their families.

Groban Grabs Elvis' Holiday Crown
by David Jenison
EOnline
Wed, 19 Dec 2007 10:25:25 AM PST
Holiday sales might be down, but it's no gloomy Christmas for Josh Groban. He just broke a chart record Elvis set back when Eisenhower was president!

Josh Groban's Noël now claims an unprecedented four straight weeks at number one, a feat never before accomplished by a holiday album. Elvis Presley set the previous record, three weeks, half a century ago with 1957's Elvis' Christmas Album.

For the week ended Sunday, Noël topped the chart and rewrote the record books by selling an incredible 669,000 copies, according to the latest Nielsen SoundScan numbers.

Groban, whose single "I'll Be Home for Christmas" topped the AC charts this week as well, has sold nearly 2.8 million copies of Noël in its 10-week run. That puts Noël in the lead as the year's bestselling album, and if the trend holds, it'll become the first holiday album to top year-end sales in the SoundScan era.

Furthermore, the disc's 669,000-copy week is both a career-best for Groban and a 2007-best for a nondebuting album. Even factoring in first-week debuts, Noël's current week still finishes fifth among the year's biggest bows.

Though his sales will drop sharply once Christmas Day hits, Groban still has a full shopping week to try to extend his number one run and further cement his place in chart history.

Groban CD is year's best seller

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Josh Groban's "Noel" has made music history as the first Christmas album to top the U.S. album charts for four consecutive weeks, Billboard.com said Wednesday.

While Elvis Presley's "Elvis' Christmas Album" was No. 1 for the same amount of time, his disc didn't stay atop The Billboard 200 four consecutive weeks.

"Noel" has also surpassed the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack as the top-selling album of 2007, Billboard.com said.
________

Josh Groban's Noel Surpasses 'High School Musical 2' As 2007's Best Seller Record-breaking, Oprah-approved holiday LP spends fourth week at #1.
By Chris Harris
MTV

Since its initial release 10 short weeks ago, Josh Groban's Noël has unexpectedly gone from being just another in a long list of forgettable Christmas-centric LPs to the best-selling album of 2007. With nearly 2.8 million copies sold — most coming within the last four weeks — Noël has usurped the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack (which has sold just over 2.7 million units) and Daughtry, the 2006 debut by "American Idol" finalist Chris Daughtry, (2.3 million) for that title.

What's more, Noël, which has increased in sales each week and has remained in the Billboard top 10 all those weeks, has shattered several sales records, thanks in large part to Oprah Winfrey's recent endorsement of the album as "the one Christmas CD every family should have."

According to the latest SoundScan totals, Noël, which sold another 669,000 copies, is the first Christmas album to spend four consecutive weeks on top in the chart's 51-year history. It's also only the second Christmas album to ever spend a total of four weeks at #1, tying it with Elvis Presley's 1957 LP Elvis' Christmas Album.

Noël is also the first album of any kind to spend four consecutive weeks at #1 and experience a sales increase each of those weeks since No Doubt's 1995 outing Tragic Kingdom, and the 669,000 copies the Groban album sold last week denotes the biggest single-week tally for a Christmas album since Kenny G's Miracles: The Holiday Album sold 819,000 copies during one of the last weeks of 1994. Plus, Noël is on pace to pass the 3 million-sold mark, which would make it the only album released in 2007 to reach that plateau. Needless to say, everything's coming up Groban on Billboard's weekly albums chart.

By PHIL GALLO
Variety

By selling another 669,000 copies, Josh Groban's "Noel" not only becomes the first Christmas album to top the album sales charts for four consecutive weeks, it becomes the top-selling album of 2007.

With a cume of 2.77 million, according to Nielsen SoundScan, it has displaced the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack as the year's top seller. Obviously, "Noel" has only one more week of potential sales and it should easily top the 3 million sold mark, a barrier that many observers felt would not be topped.

The 143/Reprise set moved 669,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, a 15% increase from last week's sum. Elvis Presley's "Elvis' Christmas Album" also sat on top for four weeks, but non-consecutively.

With total sales at 2.77 million, "Noel" has now surpassed the "High School Musical 2" soundtrack as this year's top selling album.

Groban's 'Noel' Makes Chart History

Groban's 'Noel' Makes Chart History
December 18, 2007 - Retail
By Geoff Mayfield, L.A.

With a fourth week at No. 1 for his "Noel" on The Billboard 200, Josh Groban carves himself a piece of chart history.

This becomes the first Christmas set in the 51-year history of Billboard's weekly album chart to hold the top rung for four consecutive weeks, and only the second to chalk up that many chart-topping weeks. Elvis Presley's "Elvis' Christmas Album," which became the first seasonal title to reach No. 1 in 1957, was the only other one to lead the list for four weeks, but the fourth of those frames was not consecutive.

When Nielsen SoundScan refreshes its charts tomorrow morning (Dec. 19), Groban's "Noel" will show a 15% gain for a weekly sum of 669,000, the largest stanza for any Christmas album since Kenny G's "Miracles -- The Holiday Album" rang 819,000 in the Christmas week of 1994. That is the largest week measured by a holiday album in Nielsen SoundScan history.

More significantly, with this volley, Groban's "Noel" becomes the bestselling album of the calendar year, overtaking "High School Musical 2." The former now approaches 2.8 million copies since its Oct. 2 release, while the Walt Disney soundtrack has posted 2.7 million since it reached stores Aug. 14.

"High School Musical 2" holds at No. 6 on The Billboard 200 but shows a 39% increase, which takes its total to 178,000. The album’s growth was fueled by the Dec. 11 DVD release of the Disney Channel film. Regardless of whether "HSM 2" or "Noel" ends up being the year's bestseller, the winner will have the latest release date on any year's top-unit title since Nielsen SoundScan launched in 1991.

"Noel" also becomes the first album since No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom" in December 1996 to lead the chart for four straight weeks with gains in each of those weeks.

Josh Groban "Petit Papa Noel" in France

Josh's beautiful performance of Petit Papa Noel in France. Our thanks to Lindt (French Fan Club) for providing the original version of this performance for our French speaking family.

Petit Papa Noel
A. L. Martinet/Henri Ovanessian

Pour voir si tu m'as apporté

Petit Papa Noel (Little Father Christmas)
A. L. Martinet/Henri Ovanessian

It's a beautiful Christmas night
Snow spreads its white coat
And eyes lift toward the sky
On their knees, small children
Before closing their eyes
Say a last prayer.

Little Father Christmas
When you come down from the sky
With thousands of toys
Don't forget my little stocking.
But before you leave
You should dress well
Outside you will be so cold
And it's kind of my fault.

I can't wait for sunrise
To see if you brought me
All the lovely toys that I see in my dreams
And that I ordered from you.

Little Father Christmas
When you come down from the sky
With thousands of toys
Don't forget my little stocking.

And when you are on your beautiful cloud
Come first to our house
I wasn't always very good
But I ask for your forgiveness.

Little Father Christmas
When you come down from the sky
With thousands of toys
Don't forget my little stocking.

Todd Lazarski - Celebrity News Service News Writer

New York, NY (CNS) - Holiday-sentimental shoppers kept Josh Groban's latest croon-fest afloat this week, as his album, "Noel," maintained it's top spot on the Billboard 200 chart and also captured the 'Greatest Gainer' designation.

In it's ninth week, Groban's effort has achieved Platinum-level sales figures twice over, and promises to dominate the yuletide airwaves as the closest Christmas competitor, Manheim Steamroller's "Christmas Song," slipped back to #11.

Josh Groban's first-place 'Noel' is on record pace
By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY

As sales of his Christmas album snowball into the record books, Josh Groban is shaping up as 2007's biggest gift to the music industry.

Noel, released Oct. 9, is No. 1 for the third week straight, tying a record for holiday albums set by Elvis Presley's Elvis' Christmas Album in 1957.

Last week, he sold 581,000 copies, a gain of 8% over the previous week's haul of 539,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan. And early indicators point to a fourth chart-topping week with an even bigger take when SoundScan data are announced Wednesday for the week ending Sunday.

"It would be the first time a No. 1 album has increased four weeks in a row," says Billboard's Geoff Mayfield. "It's been a slow year, but that doesn't take anything away from the fact that he has amassed huge numbers."

Now at 2.1 million copies, Noel could easily reach 3 million, making it the only title issued in 2007 to hit that mark. He's in striking distance of surpassing High School Musical 2, which leads the sales pack this year with 2.5 million copies, followed by Daughtry, the 2006 debut by American Idol finalist Chris Daughtry, with 2.3 million.

If you're going to add one CD to your holiday collection this year, make it Josh Groban's 'Noel'

Thursday, December 13, 2007

Do yourself a favor this year and buy some new Christmas music. You'll avoid having to hear Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas" 20 times a day on the radio if you buy a new CD or two.

It's been about two years since I purchased a new Christmas CD. While I am still taking a look back at my unnecessarily large CD collection, I wanted to rave about Josh Groban's "Noel" CD released this year. I'm a big fan of Groban, but I just hadn't ventured over to the CD section of any store in several months to check out his latest release. I always walk away with something I never listen to again.

This past weekend, though, I broke down and bought it. I've pretty much been left speechless on how great this CD is. Groban makes some of my least favorite holiday songs – "The Christmas Song" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas" – sound like masterpieces. The CD opens with "Silent Night," a song usually buried in the middle or end of Christmas CDs. I was hooked after 20 seconds. ...more...

Josh Groban's 'Noel' Smashing Holiday Music Sales Records

Josh Groban's 'Noel' Smashing Holiday Music Sales Records

Your Guide to Top 40 / Pop.

After 3 consecutive platinum albums featuring his warm, inviting baritone voice interpreting both pop tunes and classical material, a Christmas collection seemed a natural for Josh Groban. However, no one knew the number of fans that would be waiting for a set of holiday songs featuring Josh. 8 weeks out the album Noel is already certified double platinum and has sold over 1.5 million copies with sales figures climbing dramatically each week as Christmas nears.
Noel is the first Christmas album to hit #1 on the Billboard album chart since Kenny G's Miracles 13 years ago. Some music industry experts are now predicting that Noel could become the biggest selling holiday album of all time. This is warm seasonal reassurance for an industry that has had a rather rocky 2007. TV appearances on Oprah Winfrey's "My Favorite Things" edition of her show Oprah have certainly helped boost the sales. Additional TV appearances before Christmas and the Disney Christmas Special on Christmas Day December 25, 2007 could move sales of the album into the 4 million range.

The runaway success of Groban's magnificent collection of holiday classics will be Groban's fourth multi-platinum album in a row. "NOEL" sold well over one million copies in the last two weeks and remains the Number One album in America after eight weeks on the pop charts.

"NOEL" is also the first Christmas album to reach No. 1 in 13 years with industry buzzing that it may be one of the biggest-selling albums of 2007 and the biggest Christmas CD of all time. The album is also the No. 1 Digital album, the #1 record at Amazon and the No. 1 record at Barnes & Noble.

According to Chuck Gorman, vice president of music for Barnes & Noble, "Josh Groban's 'NOEL' has already sold more copies than any holiday CD in our history. The numbers are staggering."

With upcoming TV appearances -- "Rachael Ray" on Dec. 20th, a re-airing of "Oprah Winfrey's Favorite Things" show on December 24th, "Larry King" and "Good Morning America" both also on December 24th and the "Disney Christmas Special" December 25th -- Groban's sales are expected to continue at this pace through the end of the year and may reach a record-breaking four million units.

"Josh Groban's talents continue to grow along with the quality of his work as an artist. His last album 'Awake' and the new one 'NOEL' are both masterpieces. The entire Warner family is so proud of this success," stated Warner Bros. Records CEO Tom Whalley.

Groban, a 26-year-old Los Angeles native who is currently on a promotional tour throughout Europe and Scandanavia commented on the success of "NOEL": "This was a special gift for my fans who have been asking for a Christmas record for years. I'm overjoyed with the reaction."

With sold out concert arenas around the world and album and DVD sales surpassing 17 million units, the success of "NOEL" internationally looks equally impressive with a sales rundown including three times platinum in Canada, two times platinum in South Africa and No. 1 in Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines. Predicted sales are expected to exceed three quarters of a million CDs outside the US.

Previous promotional TV appearances for Groban's "NOEL" include 2 recent performances on "Oprah Winfrey" holiday shows, "Regis and Kelly," and performances on "Good Morning America" as well as opening the NBC Christmas Tree Lighting Show.

Josh Groban "Noel" is Number 1

Josh Groban ("The Voice") has lots to smile about...he is #1 (and always has been in our book) on Billboard and just about everywehre else and "Noel" proves it again this week with a staggering 539,000 in sales putting Josh well over for platinum multiples and stores are selling out like hot cakes!! Target has the exclusive sales of the Special Edition "Noel" with the DVD "The Making of Noel" and cannot keep them on the shelves and between Starbucks, Amazon and Barnes & Noble, they are keeping the music departments hopping with trips back and forth to restock. Now think about it folks, we still have three weeks left before Christmas and its release in other countries. Wow, what a well-deserved very, merry Christmas this will be for Josh and, as we have said many times here and at the JG fan clubs, this will be, without a doubt, the Christmas album of all time.

Billboard reports:
"Josh Groban's "Noel" retains its lead on the chart for a second week. The 143/Reprise effort moved 539,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan, a 33% increase in sales."

Let's celebrate with a selection from "Noel" -- the exquisitely beautiful "Ave Maria"

Josh Groban Noel News Flashes!

Groban in good position to maintain chart crown
By Geoff Mayfield

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Some of Josh Groban's fans think he has the voice of an angel, so it seems appropriate that his first attempt at a Christmas album carves out a rare niche in chart history.

With Thanksgiving week's store traffic and an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" accelerating an album that already had momentum, his "Noel" captures an 81 percent sales increase and No. 1 on the Billboard 200. That makes his set the first Christmas album to lead the big chart in 13 years, and only the second to top the list since 1962.

"Noel" garners 405,000 copies (moving from No. 2 to No. 1), the strongest week of Groban's career and the largest by any Christmas set since Celine Dion's "These Are Special Times" topped 460,000 in two different weeks of 1998. Groban's uptick of 182,000 copies easily seals The Billboard 200's Greatest Gainer award. ...more...
